1.5km tunnel completed! Bullet Train project in Maharashtra reaches new milestone | WATCH

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday virtually witnessed the final breakthrough of a 1.5-kilometer mountain tunnel for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project in Maharashtra’s Palghar district from Rail Bhawan in New Delhi. The tunnel, located between Virar and Boisar stations, is among the longest in the district and marks a major milestone for India’s high-speed rail initiative.
According to the Railway Ministry, this is the second tunnel breakthrough in Maharashtra, following the completion of a 5-kilometer underground tunnel between Thane and BKC in September 2025. Engineers and officials celebrated the achievement, highlighting the complexity of constructing long tunnels through hilly terrain.
The 508-kilometer Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, spanning Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, is India’s only bullet train line designed to operate at speeds of up to 320 kmph, reducing travel time between the two cities to just 2 hours and 17 minutes.
The project is being executed with technical and financial assistance from the Japanese government, bringing world-class technology and expertise to India’s rail infrastructure.
With this latest tunnel breakthrough, the bullet train project moves closer to completion, promising faster, safer, and modern connectivity across the western region of the country.
