Monsoon woes: Kaziranga shuts jeep safari from May 19 until further notice

Guwahati: The jeep safari at Assam’s world-renowned Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve will be closed indefinitely from 19 May 2025, due to the onset of the monsoon season and deteriorating road conditions, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) announced on Sunday.

In a post shared on social media platform X, the CMO cited persistent bad weather and poor road conditions as the reason for the decision. The announcement was accompanied by an official order issued by the Forest Department.

Kaziranga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, draws both domestic and international tourists each year, with visitors particularly drawn to its population of the iconic one-horned rhinoceros. It is the largest national park in northeast India and a significant stronghold for wildlife conservation in the region.

Declared a National Park in 1974, Kaziranga is home to the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinos and hosts a variety of other species, including Bengal tigers, elephants, panthers, bears, and hundreds of species of birds.

The park is located across the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of Assam, flanked by the Brahmaputra River to the north and the Karbi Anglong hills to the south.

Park authorities have not specified a reopening date and have advised visitors to await further updates regarding the resumption of safari services.
