Both Houses of Parliament adjourned till Monday amid Opposition demand for Amit Shah's statement

A stormy day in Parliament ended with both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha adjourned till 11 am on Monday, August 10, following repeated disruptions by Opposition members demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on alleged police excesses in Delhi and other parts of the country.

The Lok Sabha was initially adjourned till 12 noon shortly after convening as Opposition MPs protested over the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Temple and the NEET paper leak issue.

Before adjourning the House, Speaker Om Birla led members in paying tributes to the freedom fighters of the Quit India Movement ahead of its anniversary on August 9.

Stressing the importance of maintaining parliamentary decorum, Birla remarked that continuous disruptions were not good for the functioning of the House.

When proceedings resumed, the Lok Sabha took up legislative business and passed the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The Bill further amends the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, and had already been passed by the Rajya Sabha.

The Rajya Sabha, meanwhile, witnessed repeated slogan-shouting by Opposition members demanding Amit Shah's presence in the House. The Opposition maintained that the Home Minister should make a statement on the alleged police excesses before normal proceedings could continue.

Congress MP Pawan Khera said the Opposition had conveyed its demand through Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.

He asserted that the House would function smoothly once Amit Shah addressed the issue.

Responding to the protests in the Rajya Sabha, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised the Opposition's conduct, saying members were raising slogans and walking out despite the government being present to conduct business.

He also pointed out that the Home Minister had been present in Parliament throughout the day.

Despite the disruptions, the government managed to clear the MSME Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha before proceedings concluded. With no further business taken up, both Houses were adjourned till 11 am on Monday, August 10, when the Monsoon Session is scheduled to resume.
