Lok Sabha adjourned till 2 PM as Opposition intensifies protest over July 20 student crackdown

The Monsoon Session witnessed another stormy day on Thursday as the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 PM following relentless protests by the Opposition over the alleged police action and firing during the July 20 student protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, further deepening the political standoff between the Centre and the INDIA bloc.

The uproar erupted after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi raised the issue in the House and levelled allegations against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, prompting noisy scenes that disrupted proceedings.

Before the adjournment, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla congratulated Indian athletes for their stellar performances at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

He lauded Murali Sreeshankar for clinching the silver medal in the men's long jump with an effort of 8.09 metres. Birla also congratulated Dilip Mahadu Gavit for winning gold and Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi for securing silver in the men's T47 100m event.

Outside Parliament, the political heat intensified. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said Amit Shah should be present in the House to respond to the issues being raised by the Opposition.

‘Yes, he should come,’ she told reporters when asked if the Home Minister should attend Parliament.

Earlier in the morning, MPs from several INDIA bloc parties assembled at Makar Dwar carrying placards demanding accountability over the alleged police action against students on July 20.

The protesting MPs also questioned the Centre over alleged financial irregularities in donations made to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya.

The demonstrations coincided with the Rajya Sabha's scheduled consideration of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, adding to the charged atmosphere in Parliament.
