Chennai: A new low-pressure system brewing over the Bay of Bengal is likely to strengthen over the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday, warning of heavy rain across several parts of Tamil Nadu.

According to IMD officials, a cyclonic circulation currently positioned over the Comorin Sea and nearby areas is drifting west-northwest and is expected to consolidate into a low-pressure area soon. A second system is also likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal by Friday or Saturday and could intensify into a depression within 48 hours if conditions remain favourable.

With the weather systems evolving, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts today. Both regions have already witnessed intermittent showers this week and may experience isolated heavy spells accompanied by strong winds. Chennai and its suburbs are expected to receive moderate rain with thunderstorms, especially by evening as convective activity increases.

Local authorities have been alerted and asked to keep disaster-response teams ready. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during lightning, avoid waterlogged stretches and stay updated through official weather bulletins.

Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea along the southeast Bay of Bengal due to rough conditions and increasing wind speeds that could pose risks to small craft.

Meteorologists note that this is the second significant disturbance forming in the Bay during the ongoing Northeast Monsoon. With moisture-laden winds strengthening, coastal Tamil Nadu is likely to see enhanced rainfall over the next few days.
