Suspended Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh has resigned from the Punjab Assembly, a day after two other party legislators quit the AAP's primary membership.

Singh, who represents the Amritsar North constituency, submitted his resignation to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Monday. He also announced the decision in a Facebook post, sharing a copy of his resignation letter.

"I have resigned from the membership of Punjab Vidhan Sabha," Singh wrote.

In his letter to the Speaker, he stated that his resignation from the House would take effect from November 1, 2026.

The development comes a day after AAP legislators Chetan Singh Jouramajra, representing Samana, and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, the MLA from Sanour in Patiala district, resigned from the party's primary membership. Singh's resignation, however, is from the Assembly.

Why was Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh suspended from AAP?

A former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Singh was suspended from the AAP for five years in June 2025 over alleged anti-party activities.

The action followed his criticism of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau's move against Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who was arrested in a disproportionate assets case.

Singh had also repeatedly questioned the AAP government's handling of the 2015 sacrilege and police-firing cases in Faridkot. He was part of the Punjab Police special investigation team that investigated the Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan firing incidents.

He raised the sacrilege issue several times in the Assembly and also criticised the Bhagwant Mann government after more than 20 people died in an incident involving spurious liquor in Amritsar last year.

Singh took premature retirement from the police service in 2021 and joined the AAP. He was elected from Amritsar North in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.
