Kolkata remains waterlogged as IMD predicts more heavy rain across South Bengal

Kolkata: The impact of Tuesday's torrential rain continues to disrupt normal life across South Bengal, with several parts of Kolkata still reeling under severe waterlogging.

Areas such as Dum Dum and Chinar Park remain inundated with knee-deep water, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns that there is no immediate relief from the wet spell.

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, a cyclonic circulation persists over adjoining Jharkhand and Bihar, while a monsoon trough stretches from north Jharkhand to Tripura.

The prevailing weather system is expected to trigger widespread rainfall across South Bengal over the next few days.

The region remained under cloudy skies throughout Tuesday, with only brief sunny intervals before rain-bearing clouds returned.

Fresh spells of rain are likely later in the day across Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, among other districts.

For Wednesday, the weather office has forecast light to moderate rain across Kolkata and much of South Bengal.

Heavy rainfall is expected in North and South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Paschim Bardhaman and Bankura, where alerts have already been issued.

While temperatures are expected to remain slightly lower due to continuous rainfall, high humidity is likely to keep discomfort levels elevated.

North Bengal is also expected to witness intense rainfall, with heavy to very heavy showers forecast in Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong and Alipurduar.

Thunderstorms accompanied by rain are likely in Malda, Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur, while light to moderate showers are expected elsewhere. Authorities have cautioned about the possibility of landslides in the hills and rising river water levels.

The IMD expects rainfall intensity to gradually reduce from Thursday in South Bengal and from Friday in North Bengal if the current weather systems weaken.
