Karnataka Bandh: Why is it happening, what’s open, what’s closed?

Bengaluru: The bandh was triggered by an incident last month in which a KSRTC bus conductor travelling between Belagavi and Balekundri was allegedly attacked by pro-Marathi activists for not conversing in Marathi. The incident led to a temporary suspension of inter-state bus services between Maharashtra and Karnataka and reignited tensions over the long-standing border dispute between the two states.
The dispute dates back to India's independence, with Maharashtra historically claiming Belagavi due to its large Marathi-speaking population. Kannada activists have demanded strict action against pro-Marathi groups involved in the assault and are also calling for a ban on pro-Marathi organisations in the state.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has opposed the bandh, stating that it could disrupt students appearing for their SSLC exams. The Karnataka government has not extended official support and has urged organisers to reconsider. Additional security forces have been deployed in Belagavi and other sensitive areas to prevent any disturbances.
Karnataka Bandh: What’s open and what’s closed?
- Bus Services: KSRTC and BMTC unions are supporting the bandh, which could disrupt bus transport across the state.
- Ola, Uber, Auto-Rickshaws: Some cab and rickshaw unions have backed the strike, leading to possible travel disruptions. Metro, railway, and airport services remain unaffected.
- Banks: Banks will remain closed as March 22 falls on a Saturday.
- Schools & Colleges: Some institutions may remain shut, but there is no official confirmation.
- Eateries & Businesses: Restaurants and cinemas have expressed symbolic support but are expected to stay open.
- Government Offices & Healthcare: All essential services, hospitals, and government offices will function as usual.
Security has been tightened across Karnataka, particularly in Belagavi, as authorities monitor the situation closely.
