Will Jana Nayagan miss its release date? Court adjournment raises alarm

Chennai: The uncertainty surrounding actor Vijay’s most anticipated movie Jana Nayagan has intensified after the Madras High Court on Tuesday adjourned the urgent plea filed by the film’s producers seeking immediate issuance of a censor certificate.
The political drama, directed by H. Vinoth, is scheduled for a pan-India theatrical release on January 9 as a Pongal release. The makers had submitted the film for certification on December 18. However, on December 19, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) returned the film with objections, asking for the removal of three scenes and muting of certain dialogues, reportedly citing concerns over political references.
According to the production team, the suggested changes were addressed and the revised version was resubmitted. Despite this, the censor certificate has not yet been issued, creating a bottleneck for the film’s nationwide rollout. Without the Tamil certificate, dubbed versions in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cannot receive clearance, effectively stalling the pan-India release plan.
The delay has also prevented the opening of advance ticket bookings in Tamil Nadu, causing concern among theatre owners and distributors as the release date approaches. Given the scale of anticipation around Vijay’s final film and its expected box office performance, the uncertainty has added pressure on exhibitors.
With time running out, the production company moved the Madras High Court seeking urgent directions to the CBFC to grant certification. During the hearing before Justice P.D. Asha, the producers argued that the delay was unnecessary and could irreversibly harm the film’s commercial prospects. They contended that repeated referrals to review mechanisms were obstructing the scheduled release.
Appearing for the CBFC, Additional Solicitor General Sundaresan questioned the urgency, stating that the release date had been fixed before completing the certification process. In response, the court directed the Censor Board to file relevant documents related to the re-examination committee and adjourned the matter to tomorrow at 2:15 pm.
Jana Nayagan stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde and Mamitha Baiju, with key roles played by Priyamani, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Narain. The film features music composed by Anirudh Ravichander and has generated significant public attention due to its political theme and timing, coinciding with Vijay’s growing political presence through Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam.
As the release countdown continues, the fate of Jana Nayagan now depends on the High Court’s next hearing and the CBFC’s final decision, making the coming hours crucial for what is being positioned as one of the most significant films of Vijay’s career.
