Sushant Singh Rajput case officer Nupur Prasad gets President’s Medal

IPS officer Nupur Prasad, who supervised the CBI investigation into actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, has been recognised with the Medal for Meritorious Service this year.

Nupur, a 2007-batch AGMUT cadre officer, is among police personnel recognised for distinguished and meritorious service in 2026.

The medal recognises contributions in areas including investigation, crime prevention, law and order and police administration.

Prasad has recently returned to the Delhi Police after completing her tenure with the Central Bureau of Investigation. She is currently serving as Joint Commissioner of Police in the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), where she oversees investigations into financial and economic offences.

Role in Sushant Singh Rajput investigation

Prasad came into national prominence after being assigned to the CBI team investigating Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.

Rajput was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14, 2020. The CBI took over the investigation in August 2020 following a complaint by Rajput’s family and a dispute over jurisdiction between authorities in Maharashtra and Bihar.

As an SP, Prasad led the CBI’s special team and supervised key elements of the investigation, including witness statements, forensic evidence and medical records.

In 2025, the CBI filed closure reports after concluding that its investigation found no evidence of foul play, abetment to suicide or criminal conspiracy in Rajput’s death.

Experience across sensitive assignments

Before returning to the Delhi Police, Prasad served in several policing roles across the Delhi Police, CBI, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal.

She was the first Deputy Commissioner of Police of Shahdara district in Delhi, where she worked against drug networks and gambling operations.

She has also handled security arrangements for major events, including Delhi University elections and Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort.

New role in Delhi Police

Prasad is now serving as Joint Commissioner of Police in the Economic Offences Wing.

Her current responsibilities include overseeing investigations into financial and economic crimes.

The latest recognition comes after a career involving law and order, specialised investigations, administration and high-profile cases.

The Medal for Meritorious Service is part of the broader recognition given to police personnel for sustained and distinguished service. Prasad’s award comes after assignments spanning conventional policing, specialised investigations and major security duties.

Her role in the Sushant Singh Rajput investigation brought considerable public attention, but her career also includes senior responsibilities within the Delhi Police and CBI beyond that case.
