IndiGo has introduced a new entry-level fare category that allows passengers to travel with cabin baggage only on direct domestic and international flights.

The airline, operated by InterGlobe Aviation, announced on Wednesday that the new 'IndiGo Lite' fare is aimed at travellers who do not require checked baggage and want a lower-priced ticket.

Under the new fare, passengers will receive an automatically assigned seat at no extra cost and can carry a cabin bag weighing up to 7kg. According to the airline, the fare offers a lower base price than its other ticket categories.

Budget fare targets passengers travelling light

The IndiGo Lite option will be available for economy class passengers and will be the airline's lowest-priced fare category.

"Customers will enjoy a lower base price with an auto-assigned seat at no additional cost, and a cabin bag allowance of up to 7kg," IndiGo said in a statement.

Explaining the launch, IndiGo Chief Strategy Officer Aloke Singh said the fare had been designed for passengers who prefer to travel light and pay only for the services they need.

"Designed for customers who travel light and would like to pay only for the services they need, IndiGo Lite is another step towards building a strong, fit-for-purpose product portfolio. This reflects our agility in responding to the market dynamics while reinforcing our commitment to making travel more accessible and affordable for our customers," Singh said.

Air India Express already offers fares for passengers travelling with cabin baggage only.

IndiGo currently operates more than 2,100 flights every day.
