In a groundbreaking initiative, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) is all set to launch India’s first-ever car ferry train service, just in time for the Ganesh Chaturthi festive rush. The new route will link Kolad in Maharashtra to Verna in Goa, offering travelers the unique convenience of taking their personal vehicles along — while enjoying a comfortable rail journey in dedicated passenger coaches.

A faster, safer and greener route to Goa

Currently, road trips from Mumbai or Pune to Goa can take up to 20–22 hours, often delayed by heavy traffic and the challenging terrain of the Western Ghats. In contrast, this ferry train will complete the journey in just 12 hours, making it a faster and more relaxing alternative.

KRCL officials say this initiative will significantly ease highway congestion, especially during the festive season when thousands head to Goa to celebrate Ganeshotsav with family.

How car ferry train works

Previously used for transporting trucks, this upgraded model is now tailored to accommodate private vehicles:

  • 20 custom-built wagons, each carrying 2 cars, totaling 40 cars per trip
  • Service operates only when at least 16 vehicles are booked
  • Departure: 5 pm from Kolad
  • Arrival: 5 am at Verna
  • Reporting time: 2 pm for loading and formalities

Passengers are not allowed to stay in their vehicles during the trip. Instead, they’ll travel in attached coaches:

  • 3AC coach fare: ₹935 per person
  • Second seating fare: ₹190 per person
  • Max 3 passengers per car: 2 in 3AC, 1 in SLR
  • Car transport charges: ₹7,875 (one way)

Sustainable travel meets convenience

Besides saving time and offering a stress-free travel experience, the service promotes eco-friendly travel by reducing road traffic, fuel usage, and carbon emissions. It also creates new opportunities for carpooling and safe, comfortable family travel during peak seasons.

As India’s first car ferry train, this service is expected to redefine travel to Goa — combining the joy of driving your own car with the ease of train travel.
