Jammu: The Indian Army launched a security operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district on Monday following reports of two suspicious individuals dressed in army-style uniforms.

Army personnel cordoned off a Military Engineering Service (MES) building in the area after locals reported seeing two unidentified men dressed in army-style clothing near the facility in Bari Brahmana.

Witnesses alerted authorities to the suspicious movement, prompting troops to cordon off the building and restrict access to the surrounding area. Searches were carried out inside and around the MES premises to establish the identity of the individuals and assess any potential threat. Officials said the swift response was aided by timely information from residents.

“The operation is going on and further details are awaited,” one official confirmed.

Frequent target of infiltrators

Samba lies along the international border, an area frequently targeted by infiltration attempts. Security agencies have long warned of drones being used to drop weapons, narcotics and cash from across the frontier, allegedly with support from Pakistan’s intelligence services.

Similar infiltration attempts are also reported along the Line of Control (LoC), which is guarded by the Army in districts such as Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Poonch and Rajouri, as well as parts of Jammu.

As recently as January 15, security agencies reported suspected drone intrusions along the International Border in Samba district and the Line of Control in Poonch, for the third time in a week. The sightings came days after an arms consignment was recovered in Paloora village of Ghagwal near the IB in Samba.

The Border Security Force (BSF), which guards the border, employs advanced anti-drone systems to counter such incursions. While many drones are intercepted or forced back, occasional breaches have occurred, including militants crossing under cover of firing or through tunnels dug from the Pakistani side.
