Today’s weather: North India shivers under cold wave while Mumbai weather stays mild

New Delhi: Today’s weather across large parts of India remains harsh, as a prolonged cold wave and dense fog affect several states, especially in North India. Since mid December, temperatures have dropped sharply, with foggy conditions disrupting daily life, road movement, and flight operations.
On Monday, December 22, states including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, and Delhi-NCR witnessed biting cold and poor visibility. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dense to severe fog is likely to persist during night and morning hours in many regions over the next few days.
IMD forecast: Fog, cold wave and snowfall ahead
The IMD has warned of severe dense fog in parts of East Uttar Pradesh till December 23. Similar conditions are expected in Bihar on December 23 and 24, while Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh may see dense fog between December 25 and 28. Cold wave conditions are also expected to continue in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Haryana.
In the hilly regions, the weather department has forecast heavy rain and snowfall in isolated higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and northeast Himachal Pradesh over the next 24 hours. Uttarakhand saw brief relief on Sunday as sunshine returned to the plains, but yellow alerts for fog and snowfall remain in place for the coming days.
Rajasthan experienced a slight rise in minimum temperatures due to a western disturbance, offering temporary relief. However, dense fog is expected in northern and eastern districts from December 22 to 24, with a fresh cold wave likely to return from December 24 as temperatures drop again.
Delhi continues to face very poor air quality, with fog compounding the situation. While flight operations were disrupted over the weekend due to low visibility, operations resumed normally on Monday morning.
In contrast, Mumbai weather remains stable with no cold wave warnings.
