New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on Friday with Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez in their first conversation since the United States captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, officials confirmed. The two leaders agreed to strengthen and expand bilateral relations in a range of areas.

Modi said on X that he and Rodríguez “Spoke with Acting President of Venezuela, Ms. Delcy Rodríguez. We agreed to further deepen and expand our bilateral partnership in all areas, with a shared vision of taking India-Venezuela relations to new heights in the years ahead.” The call highlights New Delhi’s continued diplomatic engagement with Caracas amid ongoing political uncertainty in Venezuela following the dramatic turn of events.

Rodríguez assumed the role of acting president on January 5 after Maduro was captured by US forces during a rare military operation. Her government has since sought to navigate international pressure while maintaining Venezuela’s sovereignty and stability.

India’s engagement comes against the backdrop of its earlier response to the situation in Venezuela, in which the Ministry of External Affairs described the developments as a matter of “deep concern” and emphasised the need for peaceful dialogue and stability in the region.

"India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela. We call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region. The Embassy of India in Caracas is in contact with members of the Indian community and will continue to provide all possible assistance", the statement had further noted.
