Seattle: Seattle witnessed history on India’s 79th Independence Day as the Indian tricolour was proudly hoisted atop the city’s iconic 605-feet-tall Space Needle — the first time that a foreign nation’s flag has been raised at the globally renowned landmark.

Consul General of India in Seattle, Prakash Gupta, along with Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and city leaders, led the momentous ceremony. Sharing the milestone on X, Gupta wrote: “No greater honour than this! Raising the Tiranga on top of the Seattle skyline at Space Needle.”

The Consulate also hosted a community reception at Seattle’s scenic Kerry Park, which offered sweeping views of the skyline with the Indian flag fluttering proudly on the Space Needle. The event drew a massive turnout from the Indian American community, along with several US dignitaries, including Congressman Adam Smith, Chief Justice of the Washington Supreme Court Debra L. Stephens, Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho, and Seattle Parks & Recreation Director AP Diaz.

Speaking at the reception, Congressman Smith hailed the flag-hoisting as a symbol of the region’s diversity and the enduring ties between India and the Pacific Northwest.

The celebrations were infused with culture and emotion, featuring the national anthems of both nations, traditional dance performances, and a powerful poetic recital by acclaimed actor and artist Piyush Mishra.

The unprecedented moment of the tricolour soaring above Seattle’s most iconic landmark was hailed as a proud testament to India’s global presence and the strength of the Indian diaspora.
