New Delhi: In a continuing diplomatic standoff following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, the Government of India on Monday, has extended its ban on the use of Indian airspace by Pakistan-registered and operated aircraft. The restriction, which was initially imposed on April 30, will now remain in effect until July 24, 2025.

Pahalgam terror attack

The ban was part of a series of strong measures taken by India in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people. The Indian government holds cross-border elements responsible for the attack and initiated swift diplomatic and strategic countermeasures.

Details of the ban

According to the latest NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) issued on Monday, the ban applies to Pakistan-registered aircraft and aircraft owned, operated, or leased by Pakistani airlines and operators, including military flights. These aircraft will not be permitted to enter Indian airspace until the specified deadline of July 24.

This is the third time the airspace restriction has been extended. It was originally set to expire on May 24, and was later extended until June 24 before Monday’s announcement of the current extension.

Pakistan mirrors India’s action

Pakistan has also extended its ban on Indian aircraft using its airspace until July 24. This restriction was first imposed on April 24, two days after India’s announcement of punitive actions.

Pakistan’s decision followed India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and the closure of the Attari border crossing, the only operational land route between the two countries. India also downgraded diplomatic ties with Islamabad in the immediate aftermath of the Pahalgam attack.
