Iranian FM Aragachi dials Jaishankar: Discusses evolving situation in Iran amid looming US threat

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar received a telephone call from Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday, as the two discussed the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Iran and the surrounding region.
The high-level diplomatic outreach, confirmed by Jaishankar in a post on the social media platform X, comes as the Islamic Republic faces a violent domestic uprising and escalating threats of intervention from the United States.
"Received a call from Iranian FM @araghchi. Discussed the evolving situation in and around Iran," Jaishankar posted.
Escalating Unrest and Evacuation Orders
The conversation took place hours after the Indian government significantly upgraded its travel warning, ordering all Indian nationals to leave Iran immediately. The "leave now" advisory marks a sharp shift in New Delhi’s assessment of the crisis, which has seen nationwide protests enter their most violent phase since late 2025.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran instructed all students, pilgrims, and business travellers to depart the country by any available commercial means. The embassy further advised those unable to leave immediately to stay indoors and keep their passports and identification documents readily available for an emergency exit.
Human rights monitors and international observers estimate that more than 2,500 people have been killed in the unrest. An ongoing internet blackout in the country has made independent verification of casualties difficult and has hampered the ability of Indian nationals to contact the embassy or their families.
Washington’s Pivot Toward "MIGA"
The diplomatic tension has been further inflamed by a series of statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has addressed the Iranian people directly using the slogan "MIGA" (Make Iran Great Again).
In a post on Tuesday, Trump urged "Iranian Patriots" to continue their protests and take over government institutions, promising that "help is on its way." The president also announced a suspension of all diplomatic meetings with Tehran and a 25% tariff on any nation that continues to trade with the Islamic Republic.
Some personnel at a key U.S. military base in Qatar have also been advised to evacuate by Wednesday evening. The decision came as a senior official in Iran brought up an earlier Iranian attack there.
