IMD alert: Bay of Bengal deep depression to intensify into cyclonic storm, heavy rain for Tamil Nadu and Andhra

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and is moving west-northwest at 10 km per hour as of October 26, 2025. The system is centered about 610 km west of Port Blair, 790 km east-southeast of Chennai, 850 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam and 840 km southeast of Kakinada.

The IMD forecasts that the system is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours, and further strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28. It is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada during the evening or night of October 28, with maximum sustained winds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorm alert:

  • Tamil Nadu and Puducherry: IMD predicts heavy rainfall over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram and Puducherry. Thunderstorms and lightning may occur at one or two places.
  • Andhra Pradesh Coast: Rainfall and gusty winds expected as the system approaches Kakinada, Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam.

Recent rainfall recorded:

  • Nalumukku (Tirunelveli): 13 cm
  • Oothu: 12 cm
  • Nerkundram (Chennai): 1 cm

IMD advisories:

  • Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea from October 26–28. Those already at deep sea should return to the coast immediately.
  • Residents in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh should stay alert, follow official advisories and take necessary precautions.
