The Indian Air Force has successfully conducted a trial drop of the indigenously designed and developed Khagantak-243 long-range glide bomb, highlighting progress in India's development of domestically produced precision-guided weapons.

The Indian Air Force announced that it had successfully conducted the drop of the Khagantak-243, describing the trial as a significant milestone for the force and Indian industry.

According to the IAF, the trials met all their objectives. The force said the development represents another step towards increasing the capabilities of India's indigenous defence sector under the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.

The Khagantak-243 is described as a 300 kg-class stand-off precision-guided glide bomb designed to be released from an aircraft and travel towards its target without the launching aircraft needing to fly directly over the target area.

What is the Khagantak-243?

The Khagantak-243 is an indigenous glide-bomb system developed for the Indian Air Force.

Available information describes the weapon as being in the 300 kg class, with a reported range of more than 140 km when released from an altitude of around 12,000 metres.

The system uses navigation technology combining an Inertial Navigation System (INS) with satellite-based navigation. Its reported design also allows it to be integrated with fighter aircraft such as the Su-30MKI.

The weapon's stand-off capability is significant because it allows a compatible aircraft to release the munition from a considerable distance from the target.

Indian companies involved in development

The Khagantak programme involves Indian defence companies, with JSR Dynamics associated with the bomb's body and control systems and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) involved in electronics and guidance-related systems.

The IAF has also entered into a production arrangement with BEL for the weapon, according to information cited in the material provided.

Why the trial matters

For the IAF, indigenous development of such systems can potentially reduce dependence on imported stand-off munitions while expanding the range of weapons available to fighter aircraft.
