Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu: Several areas in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, faced waterlogging on Sunday due to heavy rains that hit the region. The municipal corporation is actively working to remove stagnant water from low-lying areas affected by the downpour.

The neighbourhoods of Thitagudi, Pradyantheru, and Mettutheru experienced significant waterlogging, disrupting local traffic and causing inconvenience for residents.

Plans for improvement

Rameswaram Municipal Chairman KE Nazarkhan stated that the local government is implementing multiple measures to prevent future water accumulation, regardless of rainfall levels. This includes improving drainage systems and ensuring timely removal of water from affected areas. "Due to the rain in the morning, rainwater has accumulated in some low-lying areas. Stagnant rainwater was promptly disposed of by municipal workers," he told ANI. "Measures will be taken on a war-time basis so that water does not stagnate anywhere, no matter how heavy the rainfall," he added further.

Weather warnings

The heavy rainfall was attributed to a deep circulation over the Gulf of Mannar, which affected southern Tamil Nadu and the surrounding region.

The IMD has issued a warning for heavy rainfall from November 2 to 8, affecting multiple states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. "Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala and Mahe on November 1 and slight decrease thereafter. Gradual fall in minimum and maximum temperature over North and East India by 2-3 during November 3-7," said the warning.

"We have received reports of heavy rainfall, mainly from South Peninsular India and Tamil Nadu. However, there are no reports of heavy rainfall from the rest of the country. Heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala for the next 2-3 days, but most parts of the country will remain clear," said IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy.

IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy noted that temperatures in Northwest and East India are expected to gradually drop by 2-3°C between November 3 and 7, which may further impact weather conditions in the area. "Talking about temperature, the minimum temperature has dropped by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the Doab region in the last 24 hours. The overall temperature over Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and South Doab region is 2-4 degrees above normal. Minimum temperatures are expected to fall by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius from tomorrow morning. Temperatures are likely to fall at isolated places," she said.
