Going green: Goa Government to replace KTCL's diesel fleet with electric buses

Panaji, Oct 12 (PTI) — Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Saturday that the state government will soon replace the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited's (KTCL) diesel-run buses with electric vehicles, marking a significant step towards promoting green transportation in the coastal state.

Speaking at an event commemorating the anniversary of the state-run corporation, established in 1980 to meet public transport needs in rural areas, Sawant stressed the importance of this initiative for environmental sustainability. "Switching to electric buses is a crucial move in our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and fostering a cleaner, greener Goa," he stated.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the primary focus for KTCL management and staff should be on profitability while maintaining a dedication to providing uninterrupted services, even in challenging circumstances with fewer passengers. Despite facing losses, the corporation has remained steadfast in ensuring transportation accessibility for all.

"I urge everyone to lessen their reliance on two-wheelers and cars, opting instead for public transportation, which is a practical and convenient option for both daily commuters and long-distance travelers," Sawant said. 

He added that this shift would contribute to fewer road accidents and reduced traffic congestion, enhancing the overall travel experience in Goa while supporting the state's environmental goals. 

Inception of KTCL

The Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) was established in 1980 to improve transportation facilities in Goa's rural areas. Recently, the Goa government approved a significant investment proposal from alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to introduce electric buses as part of the efforts to enhance public transport in the state. The IIT alumni have suggested an investment of Rs 700 crore. After a Cabinet meeting that approved the proposal, the Chief Minister informed the media that the aim is to roll out 500 new electric buses.

With the arrival of more electric buses, KTCL plans to operate them on new routes, including expanding interstate services. Currently, KTCL has over 500 diesel buses, while it only has 54 electric buses. KTCL began operating electric buses three years ago. The Chief Minister of Goa has announced plans to phase out over 500 diesel buses in favour of electric buses.
