Glasgow restaurant faces backlash over India map on napkins that omitted Northeast

Glasgow: An Indian restaurant in Glasgow has come under fire after members of India's Commonwealth Games contingent pointed out that printed napkins used at the venue featured an incomplete map of India that omitted the Northeast.

The controversy surfaced after Olympic bronze medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain noticed the omission while dining at Mister Singh's India – The Home of Curry, a popular Glasgow restaurant that hosted members of the Indian team following their successful Commonwealth Games campaign.

Calling out the inaccurate depiction, Borgohain told IANS, "The map on the napkins is missing our North East. Every part of India is important and should be represented."

Ajay Singh, president of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), backed Borgohain's objection and said the napkins contained other inaccuracies as well, including an incomplete depiction of Jammu and Kashmir.

He urged the restaurant to immediately withdraw the printed napkins and replace them with a map that accurately reflects India's territorial integrity.

The restaurant has not yet issued an official statement on the controversy.

Mister Singh's India is one of Glasgow's best-known Indian restaurants and has long been frequented by visiting sports teams, dignitaries and tourists. Established more than three decades ago, the family-run restaurant is operated by four generations of the Singh family and is known for blending Punjabi culinary traditions with Scottish influences.

The controversy comes even as Indian boxing celebrated its most successful Commonwealth Games campaign.

India finished with a record seven gold medals in boxing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Gold medals were won by Preeti (54kg), Jaismine (57kg), Sakshi (51kg), Priya (60kg), Arundhati (70kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg) and Ankush Panghal (80kg). Silver medals were claimed by Jadumani Singh (55kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) and Narender (90+kg).

The haul marked India's best-ever performance in Commonwealth Games boxing. Overall, the country has won 44 boxing medals at the Games, including 11 gold, 13 silver and 20 bronze.
