Uttar Pradesh: The Ghaziabad-Kanpur Expressway, currently under development as part of the Green Highway Policy, is poised to dramatically improve connectivity in Uttar Pradesh. Once completed, the 380-kilometre corridor will reduce travel time between Ghaziabad and Kanpur from nearly eight hours to just five to five and a half hours.

The expressway will significantly enhance ease of movement between the two major industrial cities and the wider National Capital Region (NCR), including Delhi and Noida. This improvement is expected to spur industrialisation, job creation, and overall economic growth in the region.

Linking 9 districts and major routes

This ambitious infrastructure project will traverse nine districts in the state: Ghaziabad, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Kasganj, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Unnao, and Kanpur.

Notably, the expressway will also function as a connector between National Highway 9 (NH-9) and the Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway. NH-9 currently stretches from Fazilka in Punjab to Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand, passing through Ghaziabad, Hapur, and Moradabad. The expressway will additionally provide enhanced connectivity to the upcoming Jewar Airport, further increasing its strategic importance.

Planned for 4 lanes with scope for expansion

Designed initially as a four-lane road, the Ghaziabad-Kanpur Expressway includes provisions for future expansion to six lanes. This will allow the infrastructure to meet increasing traffic demands over time and ease congestion on the existing routes.

Completion target set for 2026

The expressway is expected to be completed by 2026. It is part of a broader push by the Uttar Pradesh government to position the state as a national leader in expressway infrastructure. Significant progress has already been made through projects such as the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Gorakhpur Link Expressway, and Purvanchal Expressway.

Officials believe the Ghaziabad-Kanpur Expressway will further strengthen the state’s road network, support tourism, and play a crucial role in realising Uttar Pradesh’s industrial potential.
