Gandhinagar slab collapse: 13 workers hospitalised; Amit Shah reviews rescue efforts

Ahmedabad: Thirteen workers were hospitalised after a structural slab collapsed at an under-construction building in the Kudasan area of Gandhinagar on Wednesday night, with officials saying none of the injured is in critical condition.

The accident occurred around 9.30 pm at Bosky The Empire, where workers were engaged in construction. Rescue teams reached the site soon after the slab collapsed and managed to evacuate all those trapped under the debris.

All workers rescued, no casualties

Gandhinagar Collector and District Magistrate Ravindra Khatale said around 15 workers were trapped after the slab collapsed. All of them were rescued and taken to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital.

Health Minister Praveen Pansheriya said 13 people had been admitted to the hospital and that none was in critical condition. Medical teams, including specialist doctors, were monitoring the injured.

Gandhinagar SP Ravi Teja Vasamsetty said there was no suspicion that anyone remained trapped beneath the debris.

Three injured workers were discharged, while others continued to receive treatment. Two workers suffered more serious injuries- one with a spinal injury and another with a fracture- while several others sustained minor injuries.

Rescue teams deployed at site

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire brigade and Gujarat Police were involved in the rescue operation.

SDRF Deputy Commandant Sheetal Gujjar said the team reached the site within 20 minutes of the incident. Around 60 SDRF personnel and four to five fire brigade teams were deployed.

Rescue workers used plasma cutters, gas cutters and other specialised equipment to clear the collapsed structure and check that nobody remained trapped underneath.

Officials said there were no fatalities in the incident.

Amit Shah speaks to Gujarat leaders

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the rescue and relief efforts and spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

In a post on X, Shah said immediate relief and rescue operations had been launched by the local administration and that all injured workers were safe and receiving medical treatment.

Workers from three states

Officials said the workers at the site had been brought by a contractor from different parts of the country.

According to the Gandhinagar SP, the workers included people from Dahod in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Gandhinagar MLA Ritaben Ketankumar Patel said around 20 workers usually worked at the site, but only about 13 were present when the accident occurred.

Authorities continued clearing and inspecting the site as part of the safety operation.
