New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday said he spoke with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, with both sides discussing the current situation in the region amid escalating tensions.

In a post on X, Jaishankar said, “Received a call from Foreign Minister @araghchi of Iran. Discussed the present situation.” He did not share further details about the conversation.

Rising tensions in West Asia

The interaction comes at a time of heightened tensions in West Asia, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global oil shipments. The region has witnessed increased military activity and strong rhetoric from various sides, raising concerns about the possibility of a broader conflict.

India is closely monitoring developments due to its significant economic and strategic stakes in the region. A large share of the country’s crude oil imports passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making stability in the area vital for its energy security.

Diplomatic engagement with countries in the region has increased in recent days as New Delhi works to safeguard its citizens and ensure uninterrupted energy supplies. India also has a large diaspora spread across several West Asian nations, adding to concerns as the situation evolves.

While the Ministry of External Affairs has not released a detailed account of the call, such high-level contacts are typically aimed at assessing developments and exchanging views on reducing tensions.

Iran at the centre of escalation

Iran remains central to the unfolding crisis, with reports of military incidents and retaliatory measures contributing to uncertainty. Global powers and regional actors have called for restraint in an effort to prevent further escalation.
