Drivers caught using phones on duty to face suspension, salary cuts: BMTC

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has implemented stringent new regulations to tackle the use of mobile phones and other digital devices by drivers while on duty. This initiative aims to reduce driver negligence and enhance passenger safety throughout the city’s public transportation system.

Under the updated rules, any driver caught using a mobile phone for the first time will face an immediate 15-day suspension. Additionally, these drivers may see a reduction in salary, have their increments withheld, and could be reassigned to different depots.

For repeat offenders, especially those involved in accidents, the consequences will be more severe, potentially leading to termination.

This crackdown on mobile phone use comes amid growing concerns over challenging road conditions, heavy traffic congestion, and the increasing stress levels among BMTC drivers, all factors believed to contribute to a rise in bus-related accidents.
