Doctor who paid ₹58 crore in tax shows garbage, broken roads: 'This is what our taxes fund!’

₹58 crore. That is the tax bill Mumbai-based doctor and entrepreneur Aniruddha Malpani says he paid in the last financial year, a figure that quickly grabbed attention on social media.

However, Malpani's post was less about the size of the payment and more about what he believes taxpayers should receive in return.

In a post on X, Malpani said he had no objection to paying taxes but questioned whether citizens were getting adequate value from the money collected by the government.

'I don't mind paying taxes but it bothers me that I don't get value for money on this expenditure!' he wrote, sharing a screenshot of his tax payment record for Financial Year 2025–26.

The figure displayed in the screenshot was ₹58,08,78,000, amounting to approximately ₹58 crore, 8 lakh and 78 thousand.

The unusually large tax payment drew a wave of reactions on X, with some users suggesting that Malpani should consider moving abroad rather than paying such a substantial amount in taxes in India.

One user suggested that he relocate to Monaco or Hong Kong, arguing that the money paid in taxes ultimately benefits government officials.

Malpani, however, rejected the suggestion that paying taxes in India was itself a problem.

'I earned this money in India so I am quite happy to pay it back to the government as taxes. All I am asking for is they deliver value for the money which they collect from me. Is that asking too much?' he responded.

His criticism also extended to the state of civic infrastructure. Soon after sharing his tax-filing post, Malpani reposted a picture showing garbage and damaged roads in Gurugram's Sector 23, accompanying it with the pointed remark: 'This is what our taxes fund!'

Who is Aniruddha Malpani?

Dr Aniruddha Malpani is a Mumbai-based IVF specialist, entrepreneur and angel investor.

He is associated with the Malpani Infertility Clinic in Colaba, which he runs with his wife, Dr Anjali Malpani. The clinic has been providing IVF treatment since 1991.

Beyond medicine, Malpani is the founder of Malpani Ventures, an early-stage investment firm whose interests span healthcare, education, SaaS, consumer technology and social-impact businesses.

He has also established Apni Pathshala, an initiative focused on digital literacy and future-ready education across India.

Malpani has frequently used social media to draw attention to civic concerns.
