New Delhi: More than 4.76 crore cases are pending across courts in India, the Union government informed the Lok Sabha on Friday, citing data from the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG).

In a written reply, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said that 4,76,57,328 cases were pending in district and subordinate courts as of December 31, 2025.

He added that the pendency in the Supreme Court of India stood at 92,101 cases, registering an 11.40 per cent increase over the past three years.

According to the data, 63,66,023 cases were pending across the country’s 25 High Courts, marking a 4.75 per cent rise during the same period. Among them, the Allahabad High Court had the highest backlog with 12,07,240 cases, followed by the Bombay High Court with 6,64,979 and the Rajasthan High Court with 6,87,595 pending matters.

Pendency in district and subordinate courts rose by 5.84 per cent over three years, reaching 4.76 crore cases, the minister said.

State-wise figures showed Uttar Pradesh accounting for the highest number of pending cases in lower courts at 1,13,45,328, followed by Maharashtra with 59,26,999 and West Bengal with 38,35,113.

“The disposal of cases is within the exclusive domain of the judiciary. However, the Central Government is committed to the speedy disposal of cases and reducing pendency as mandated under Article 21 of the Constitution and has taken several initiatives to provide an ecosystem for faster disposal of cases by the judiciary,” Meghwal said.

He noted that the government’s measures include strengthening judicial infrastructure, computerisation of courts, filling vacancies, promoting alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, implementing the eCourts Project, and advancing the National Mission for Justice Delivery and Legal Reforms to improve case management and reduce delays.
