Delhi Airport fog disruption: IndiGo, SpiceJet flights delayed as CAT III operations begin

Several flights at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport were delayed on Friday due to dense fog affecting large parts of north India, prompting airlines and airport authorities to issue advisories for passengers.
In a statement issued around 8 am, Delhi Airport said low visibility conditions had led to the implementation of CAT III operations, which allow aircraft to land in extremely poor visibility but often result in slower flight movements.
“Dense fog has led to CAT III operations at the airport, resulting in possible delays and disruptions,” the airport said, adding that ground teams were coordinating with all stakeholders to assist passengers across terminals.
Passengers were advised to contact their respective airlines and check real-time flight updates before heading to the airport. “We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding,” the advisory said.
Meanwhile, a Mint journalist at the airport reported severe delays for IndiGo passengers, with all flights reportedly running over six hours late. His Kolkata-bound flight, originally scheduled for 11.55 pm on Thursday, was rescheduled to 6.30 am on Friday.
According to the report, IndiGo provided refreshments to stranded passengers, while long queues were seen at food outlets. Passengers were also required to undergo security checks again to re-enter the terminal.
IndiGo, in its travel advisory, said early morning fog in Delhi and across parts of northern India was affecting visibility and flight operations.
“This is a seasonal occurrence, and flight movements are being managed accordingly to ensure safe and orderly operations,” the airline said, warning travellers of possible delays and revised schedules.
The airline added that its teams were closely monitoring weather conditions and coordinating with air traffic authorities to minimise inconvenience and ensure customer support.
SpiceJet also issued a weather advisory, warning that poor visibility in Delhi and thunderstorms with rain in Dubai could impact arrivals, departures, and consequential flights. Passengers were urged to regularly check their flight status through the airline’s website.
