Bhabanipur Election: Suvendu surges to 11,000-vote lead in Mamata’s home turf

Kolkata: Amidst a fluctuating and high-stakes tallying process, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee strengthened her position against her primary rival, Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in the Bhabanipur constituency after the 13th round of counting on Monday.
Figures released by the Election Commission show Banerjee holding 46,726 votes, maintaining a lead of 5,349 over Adhikari, who has garnered 41,377 votes.
Despite Banerjee's individual performance in her home district, broader trends indicate a powerful "saffron surge" throughout the state. As of Monday evening, the BJP has officially secured 35 seats and maintains leads in 188 others. Conversely, the TMC has officially won six seats as the tabulation of the West Bengal assembly elections continues.
According to the Commission, the BJP has clinched victories in Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Monteswar, Bhatar, Medinipur, and Asansol Dakshin. Additionally, the party has successfully captured Burwan, Khardaha, Jagatballavpur, Ranibadh, Nakashipara, and Jamuria.
The Battle for Bhabanipur
Tabulation for 293 assembly segments is proceeding under stringent security measures. Political analysts continue to characterise the Bhabanipur race as a pivotal prestige battle, pitting the incumbent Chief Minister against the Leader of the Opposition in a constituency often viewed as a barometer for urban political leanings.
The region became the centre of local tension following a "Strong Room Controversy" that escalated during the final days of the campaign. Allegations regarding the security of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) led Banerjee to perform an unusual, high-profile inspection of the storage site.
These concerns over potential machine interference have kept party operatives on high alert, resulting in a significant paramilitary presence as election officials unseal devices and verify the remaining ballots.
The Contenders and Stakes
The field of candidates for this South Kolkata hub remains diverse:
- Mamata Banerjee (TMC)
- Adhikari Suvendu (BJP)
- Pradip Prasad (INC)
- Shrijeeb Biswas (CPIM)
- Manika Mukherjee (BNARP)
- Anumita Shaw (SUCIC)
- Independent Candidates: Safar Sekh, Narayan Das, Mumtaz Ali, Malay Guha Roy, Subrata Bose, and Sk Safi Ahamed.
Bhabanipur, traditionally a TMC stronghold, is a cosmopolitan, affluent district with a demographic mix of Bengali, Gujarati, and Sikh residents. While the TMC held the seat in 2021, Banerjee notably contested from Nandigram during that cycle before returning to Bhabanipur via a subsequent by-election to consolidate her power. The 2026 race is being framed as a direct personal confrontation between the Chief Minister and Adhikari, her former protégé.
Atmosphere and Projections
The streets of Kolkata remain largely quiet under heavy security, but political headquarters are buzzing with activity as the margins shift.
Statewide exit polls from April 29 originally predicted an exceptionally tight contest with no clear path to a 148-seat majority for either party. However, while Banerjee maintains her lead in her local district, the BJP's robust statewide performance suggests the final tally will determine if the TMC can secure a fourth term or if West Bengal is facing a historic political shift.
