Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) have rolled out a one-time concession scheme offering motorists a 50 per cent waiver on outstanding traffic fines. The discount, applicable only for a limited period, will be available from August 23 to September 12, according to an official order issued by the Karnataka government.

The initiative is aimed at helping citizens clear long-standing dues without the risk of legal action, while also improving road safety compliance. A government order dated August 21 clarified that the rebate would apply exclusively to cases recorded through the Police Department’s mobile e-challan system, which issues digital violation notices via SMS or email.

Appeal from CM

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urged residents to take advantage of the concession while it lasts. In a post on X, he wrote, "Our government is committed to promoting road safety, law-abiding behavior, and public convenience… pay the pending fines of traffic violations on your vehicles and follow the traffic rules."

The Bengaluru Traffic Police advised motorists to check their vehicle registration numbers for pending challans and settle them before the September 12 deadline.

How to pay fines

Pending challans can be settled through multiple platforms during the discount period:

  • Karnataka State Police (KSP) app
  • Directly at the nearest traffic police station by providing the vehicle registration number
  • At the Traffic Management Centre
  • BTP ASTraM app introduced by the Bengaluru Traffic Division
  • Karnataka One or Bangalore One websites

In addition, payments can also be made through the BTP’s official website https://btp.gov.in.

Previous response to discount drives

Authorities expect a strong response, pointing to the 2023 discount drive where Bengaluru residents cleared over two lakh violations, leading to collections of more than ₹5.6 crore in fines. Officials said such initiatives in the past had been met with enthusiastic participation and had recovered significant amounts in unpaid penalties.

The Transport Department had earlier requested that the rebate be extended to pending cases prior to 2018-19. However, the government decided to restrict the scheme to cases filed under the Police Department’s mobile e-challan system.
