Aligarh: In a major security breach, police have recovered live cartridges, suspected fake currency, and other incriminating material from a hostel room at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), officials said on Thursday.

Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid on Wednesday at a room in Sir Ziauddin Hall inside the AMU campus.

During the search, officials seized .32 bore pistol bullets, four 12-bore cartridges, suspected counterfeit currency, eight mobile phones, and empty magazine covers.

According to university authorities, the room was allegedly occupied by a man identified as Shevaaz, who had forcibly taken over the space after evicting its legitimate residents and had been living there for several months.

AMU Proctor Naved Khan said one of the authorised occupants has been detained and questioned to determine how the accused managed to illegally occupy the hostel room.

Preliminary findings suggest that the accused had secured admission to the university as a non-resident student.

Police sources said the recovery is linked to an ongoing probe into a firing incident reported in Aligarh’s Civil Lines area on April 6. During the investigation, the suspect’s name surfaced, leading authorities to the room.

Officials added that the seized items point to possible criminal activity, including illegal possession of ammunition and circulation of counterfeit currency.

A detailed investigation is currently underway to establish the full extent of the network and any links to the recent shooting case.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over campus security and unauthorised occupancy within university hostels.
