Kerala couple transforms garbage dump into beautiful community garden

A neglected spot filled with garbage between Nileshwaram Market Junction and Karuvacheri has been transformed into a beautiful garden by a local couple. On the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary, Nisha and Sunil from Karuvacheri decided to convert the dirty public space into a clean and green area. Their initiative was motivated by the Kerala government’s call to keep public places neat and well-maintained. Sunil Kumar works with the Tourism Department, while Nisha is a teacher at Kelappaji Memorial Vocational Higher Secondary School.
The couple developed the space into a community-friendly garden that includes an open library, seating arrangements, solar-powered lights, and a water purification system. They have also created water facilities for birds and animals, ensuring the area supports local wildlife. An open gym is planned for the next phase of development. Their children, Nanda Krishna and Gautham Krishna, supported the idea wholeheartedly, with Nanda Krishna taking responsibility for supervising the open library.
Before the transformation, a part of the land belonging to the Agriculture College’s Instructional Farm had been illegally extended into the road, forcing locals to struggle with a narrow passage, dense bushes, and piled-up garbage. After the couple filed a complaint, the illegal wall was surveyed and removed. A new stone wall was built, polished, and painted to improve the appearance of the area. Financial support for this work came from Nileshwaram expatriate Vijayan Nambiar.
As part of the development, the five-meter-wide link road was expanded to seven meters with concrete laid on both sides. The remaining four cents of land were used to construct the garden. The project will be completed and officially opened to the public on December 3, the couple’s wedding anniversary, marking their meaningful gift to the community.
