Mihir's death: Kerala Education Minister orders comprehensive probe into brutal ragging

Thiruvananthapuram: Education Minister V Sivankutty has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the tragic suicide of 15-year-old Mihir Ahmed, who was reportedly subjected to brutal ragging by his schoolmates in Thrippunithura. The Minister has directed the Director of Public Instruction to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident and recommend necessary actions.

According to Mihir’s mother, he took his own life following severe harassment at Global Public School, a CBSE school in Thrippunithura, Ernakulam. Terming the incident as extremely distressing and shocking, the Minister assured that the police would take immediate legal action.

He further stated that every school in the state operates with a No Objection Certificate from the Kerala Government, and all students studying in these institutions are regarded as the children of Kerala. If any school—regardless of its educational board—engages in activities detrimental to societal well-being, stringent action will be taken against it. He also mentioned that if necessary, legal amendments would be considered to prevent such incidents.

Mihir's mother alleged that he was subjected to extreme ragging at Global Public School in Kochi, which ultimately led to his suicide. Mihir jumped to his death from a flat in Thrippunithura. According to her, his classmates mocked him over his complexion and subjected him to inhumane abuse, including forcing him to lick the toilet and flushing his face inside a closet. She further alleged that a group of students severely ragged Mihir and even celebrated his suffering until his death. Screenshots of chats containing derogatory remarks about his suicide have also surfaced.
