Body parts found in sacks in Kerala; police say remains were those of a woman, child

Palakkad, Kerala: The mystery surrounding the sacks found along the banks of the Bhavani River in Attappadi has deepened following a forensic examination, which indicated that the remains belonged to a woman and a child.

The remains were found packed in three sacks and abandoned near Cheerakkadavu in Pudur, Attappadi. The identities of the deceased have not yet been established, while police suspect that they were murdered.

Forensic examination suggests that the bodies may have remained in the water for around five days.

The sacks were found by people who had arrived in the area to graze cattle around Sunday afternoon. They noticed three sacks that appeared to have drifted down the river and become lodged along the riverbank. After opening the first sack and finding what appeared to be human remains, they alerted the police.

Police and forensic officials examined the sacks and recovered body parts, including the heads of a woman believed to be around 30 years old and a girl believed to be around five years old, from the second sack. The remains are estimated to be more than four days old.

The third sack contained body parts of a woman who was wearing only undergarments. The body had reportedly been placed inside the sack in a seated position, with the hands and legs folded.

The Bhavani River had been witnessing a strong current until around three days ago. Police suspect the sacks may have become lodged on the riverbank after the water level and flow reduced on Sunday.

Agali Deputy Superintendent of Police R. Ashokan said police have begun collecting information about people reported missing in recent days in the area and along the Tamil Nadu border.
