One tree, 42 mangoes! Uttarakhand's 116-year-old marvel goes viral
A 116-year-old mango tree in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, is drawing attention for producing 42 different varieties of mangoes from a single tree. Located inside the historic Circuit House State Park, the tree has been transformed through an innovative mango grafting project led by the state's horticulture department.
Senior Horticulture Inspector Deepak Purohit said the team grafted over 50 mango varieties onto the century-old tree, with 42 now bearing fruit, including popular varieties such as Dasheri, Langra and Chausa. The experiment demonstrates how multiple mango varieties can thrive on one tree, making it an ideal solution for homes with limited gardening space.
Gardeners say the grafting process involves carefully joining healthy branches, sealing them with grafting tape, and maintaining moisture until the graft is established. Officials believe the technique can also be adopted in home gardens and terraces, allowing people to grow several mango varieties on a single tree.
