Indore has introduced a new incentive that combines water conservation with direct financial benefits for residents. The Indore Municipal Corporation has approved a 10 per cent property tax rebate for homeowners who install and maintain functional rainwater harvesting systems.

The initiative is designed to encourage widespread adoption of rooftop rainwater harvesting and strengthen groundwater recharge across the city. Authorities have also made rainwater harvesting mandatory during building plan approvals, making sustainable water management a key part of urban development.

Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav said the city wants to turn water conservation into a people’s movement and encourage every household to participate. Municipal officials say the rebate proposal, first introduced in 2022, is now set for implementation.

Residents who already use rainwater harvesting systems report improved borewell performance and fewer water shortages during peak summer months.

By connecting tax savings with conservation, Indore hopes to make every drop count.
