New Delhi: This Christmas, sustainability and Indian craftsmanship are taking centre stage across Delhi’s malls and luxury hotels, where festive décor is getting an eco-friendly twist. Several venues have commissioned Christmas trees made entirely from recycled materials and inspired by traditional Indian art forms.

Conceptualised by designer Nehmat Mongia, the installations highlight both environmental consciousness and the country’s rich craft heritage. Artisans involved in the process said the creations were challenging to assemble but deeply rewarding.

At Le Meridien, New Delhi, the main attraction is a Christmas tree fashioned from discarded electronic waste. The hotel says it believes in sustainability and generating as little waste as possible. The Finnish ambassador to India was impressed by the tree and said it represented the sustainability issues that both nations share.

The hotel is also showcasing a second installation inspired by the Lippan art of Kutch. Created entirely by women artisans from Gujarat, the tree blends intricate mirror work and mud-relief craftsmanship with festive design.

In Gurugram, Ambience Mall has embraced the same eco-friendly approach with a towering tree crafted from upcycled sarees.

Another installation at the mall pays tribute to Karnataka’s famed Bidri metal inlay craft, transforming its signature black-and-silver aesthetic into a modern, festive centrepiece.

As Christmas draws near, visitors across the National Capital Region are stopping to admire these innovative creations. By merging sustainability, tradition and contemporary design, Delhi’s malls and hotels are redefining what festive décor can look like—celebratory, responsible and distinctly Indian.
