Corbett Tiger Reserve launches ‘Operation Monsoon’ to prevent poaching during rainy season

The Corbett Tiger Reserve may remain closed for tourists during the monsoon season, but forest protection activities are operating at full strength. Authorities have launched ‘Operation Monsoon’, an annual anti-poaching and wildlife surveillance drive aimed at protecting the reserve and the adjoining Kalagarh Division.

The operation begins with the onset of monsoon and focuses on maintaining continuous monitoring despite challenges caused by heavy rainfall, damaged roads, and disrupted connectivity.

According to reserve officials, forest teams carry out extensive foot patrols covering nearly 120 to 150 kilometres, while surveillance is strengthened across all six ranges of the Kalagarh Division. To improve monitoring in difficult terrain, authorities are using ATVs (All-Terrain Vehicles), elephants, and drones.

Monsoon is also a crucial season for forest regeneration and wildlife breeding, making protection efforts essential to preserve the reserve’s biodiversity and prevent illegal hunting activities.
