Faith, first votes and festive scenes: Bengal turns out in celebration of democracy

West Bengal’s second phase of assembly polling witnessed high voter enthusiasm across constituencies, with long queues forming from early morning as the state edged toward another strong turnout.

In Kolkata, ISKCON priests and devotees arrived at La Martiniere School polling booth with chants of ‘kirtans’ and rhythmic dholak beats, describing voting as a significant civic occasion alongside their spiritual routine. At Ripon Square, Christian nuns also queued peacefully to exercise their franchise.

First-time voters added to the momentum. In Howrah, Niharika Gupta said voting felt like a meaningful contribution to shaping governance and urged all citizens to participate.

Elderly voters were assisted by security personnel and candidates at several booths, ensuring smoother access. Political moments surfaced, with leaders exchanging greetings and one BJP candidate helping an elderly voter with an umbrella, while another took selfies with citizens, reflecting a mix of seriousness and lighter interactions amid a competitive electoral atmosphere.
