Heavy rain triggers Kakodonga River overflow, flooding villages in Assam's Golaghat

Continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days has triggered severe flooding in Assam's Golaghat district after the Kakodonga River overflowed, inundating villages, submerging homes and cutting off road connectivity. The floods have displaced dozens of tea garden workers' families, who were forced to evacuate with only essential belongings.

With no rescue boats available, residents crafted makeshift rafts from banana tree trunks to transport people, livestock and supplies through the floodwaters. Locals said annual flooding is common, but this year's incessant rain caused water levels to rise rapidly, leaving many stranded.

Many families were forced to abandon their cattle as floodwaters entered their homes. Residents taking shelter together said arranging food and other basic necessities has become increasingly difficult.

Authorities have converted a welfare centre in Dakhin Hengera into a temporary relief camp, where more than 50 affected families have taken refuge. With several areas still submerged and roads inaccessible, flood-hit residents continue to await relief and rescue operations while hoping water levels recede soon.
