Who is the Punisher? Frank Castle's return in 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' could change everything

Unlike previous Spider-Man films, Peter Parker enters ‘Brand New Day’ completely alone. At the end of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, Doctor Strange's spell erased Peter from everyone's memory, leaving him without MJ, Ned, the Avengers, or any superhero allies. That has made Frank Castle, better known as ‘The Punisher’.

Who is ‘The Punisher’?

Before becoming Marvel's most feared vigilante, Frank Castle (played by Jon Bernthal) was a decorated Marine living a quiet family life in New York. Everything changed when his wife and two children were killed in what appeared to be a gang-related shooting in Central Park.

The tragedy changed Frank into ‘The Punisher’, a ruthless one-man army who declared war on organized crime. However, the murders were later revealed to be far more complicated than they first appeared.

Why ‘The Punisher’ is different from other Marvel heroes

Frank Castle has never believed in second chances. Unlike superheroes who hand criminals over to the police, ‘The Punisher’ believes they should be permanently eliminated.

That philosophy put him on a collision course with Matt Murdock in ‘Daredevil Season 2’. While Daredevil fought for justice through the legal system, Frank relied on lethal force. Their ideological clash became one of the defining storylines of the series.

After Frank was arrested, Karen Page helped to look into the real conspiracy behind his family's deaths. The investigation exposed Major Ray Schoonover, Frank's former commanding officer, who was secretly operating as the drug kingpin known as ‘The Blacksmith’.

How Netflix expanded Frank Castle's story

Frank's journey continued in Netflix's ‘The Punisher’, which premiered in 2017.

The first season moved beyond revenge and Project Cerberus, a covert military operation linked to heroin trafficking and corruption within the CIA. It also introduced Micro, a former NSA analyst framed for exposing the conspiracy, who eventually teamed up with Frank.

The series also had Frank's complicated relationship with his former friend Billy Russo, who ultimately became one of his greatest enemies.

In Season 2, with Frank protecting teenager Amy Bendix while facing Billy Russo's quest for revenge.

His return to the MCU

Jon Bernthal reprised the role in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, where Matt Murdock sought Frank's help during the investigation into White Tiger's death.

The season's talk came was about the corrupt police officers who adopted The Punisher's iconic skull symbol as their own. Frank strongly rejected the misuse of his emblem, making it clear that he did not stand for their actions.

The season ended with Frank imprisoned inside Wilson Fisk's secret prison before escaping in the post-credits scene.

The bridge to 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'

Marvel later continued Frank's story in the Disney+ special presentation, ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill’, which served as the bridge between his escape in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ and his next MCU appearance.

Now, Frank Castle is officially heading into ’Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and his arrival raises a major question.
