‘We were united by a shared love for art’: Kamal Haasan pays tribute to S Chandran

Tamil superstar and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan expressed his condolences on the passing of S Chandran, son of Merryland Studio founder P Subrahmanyam and director of City Theaters. Kamal Haasan noted on social media that a shared passion for art had brought them together and conveyed his deep sorrow at Chandran’s demise.
In his message, Kamal Haasan wrote, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of S Chandran, son of Merryland Subrahmanyam. He was a producer and owner of the Sree Padmanabha Theatre in Thiruvananthapuram.”
He added: “Many of my films have had long runs in his theatres. Beyond professional connections, it was our shared love for art that united us. He was a great patron of the arts and had a keen interest in photography. My heartfelt condolences to Chandran’s family and friends.”
S Chandran passed away on Tuesday at the age of 90 in Thiruvananthapuram. Following Merryland Subrahmanyam, Chandran led prominent theatres in Thiruvananthapuram including Sreekumar, Srivishakh, New Theatre and Sree Padmanabha, which have been integral to the city’s cinematic legacy. He was also the proprietor of Imperial Trading Company.
