Veteran actor Urvashi has broken her silence on why she chose not to contest the recent elections of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists), citing a lack of faith in the organisation’s ability to stand united against injustices.

In an exclusive interview with Mathrubhumi News, the National Award-winning actor said her decision stemmed from the absence of a collective voice strong enough to protest against injustice.

“Certain protests continue for years as the lone voice of an individual, despite the presence of organisations. But when protests are raised collectively, they carry real weight. I don’t feel this is a time when such collective effort exists. That’s why I didn’t contest,” she said.

Urvashi further explained that her trust in AMMA’s potential to stand against any injustice — especially towards women and marginalised members — was not strong enough to participate in its electoral process.

“I did not contest because I don’t believe the organisation will raise its voice against any stance taken against us. If that belief returns, I will consider contesting,” she added.

The actor also addressed the ongoing friction between AMMA and the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), suggesting that efforts could have been made to bridge the gap between the two organisations.

“If I were in a leadership position and extended an invitation, members of WCC would have joined AMMA. They would have become part of the family,” Urvashi stated.

Her remarks come at a time when conversations around gender representation, transparency, and accountability within Malayalam cinema’s professional bodies continue to gain traction.
