Ticket refunds start rolling out after ‘Jana Nayagan’ release postponed

Refunds have started reaching moviegoers who had booked tickets for Vijay’s highly anticipated film ‘Jana Nayagan’, after the film’s scheduled 9 January release was halted amid an unresolved censor certification issue. The postponement has triggered widespread cancellations across theatres, leading cinemas and booking platforms to begin automatically reversing payments for the shelved opening shows.
The H Vinoth–directed political thriller, touted as Vijay’s final film before a full-fledged move into politics, had been set for release on Thursday. However, with the Central Board of Film Certification yet to issue a certificate, the project has run into last-minute legal and logistical complications.
Theatre cancellations and refund process
Several theatres have now started refunding paid bookings for 9 January without the need for customer requests. Victory Cinema, which cancelled all of its Friday screenings, reiterated that digital refunds would be processed immediately while physical-ticket holders must visit the venue for reimbursement.
The theatre announced, "All Friday shows (9-Jan-26) of 'Jana Nayagan' at Victory Cinema are cancelled. Online tickets will be immediately refunded to their accounts. Cash tickets will be refunded at the counter from 8-Jan-26 Morning."
Cinemas informed that the automated refund cycle had already begun across online ticketing platforms by Wednesday evening.
Censor certificate case still awaited
The film’s producers, KVN Productions, moved the Madras High Court seeking a directive for the CBFC to grant a ‘UA 16+’ certificate. The case was heard on 7 January, but the court has reserved its verdict, which industry insiders expect may only be released on or close to 9 January – the original release date.
Even if the judgement favours the production team, industry sources say a 24–48-hour buffer would still be required for distribution, censor stamping, and logistical alignment, effectively making a 9 January release unviable.
Massive advance bookings and black-market surge
‘Jana Nayagan’ had already amassed an estimated ₹45 crore in global advance ticket sales for its opening day – notably achieved before major bookings were opened in Tamil Nadu, the film’s core market. The bottleneck created by the certification issue also fuelled a spike in unauthorised ticket resales, with some first-day-first-show prices reportedly climbing as high as ₹5,000, well above Tamil Nadu’s regulated ceiling of ₹190.
Producers issue statement on postponement
KVN Productions officially confirmed the delay on Wednesday, expressing regret over the move and acknowledging the heightened anticipation around what many believe to be Vijay’s cinematic farewell before he shifts fully to political work with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
In their statement, the makers said, "It is with a heavy heart that we share this update with our valued stakeholders and audiences. The release of ‘Jana Nayagan’, eagerly awaited on January 9 has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control."

They added, "The new release date will be announced at the earliest." "Your unwavering support is our greatest strength and means everything to the entire ‘Jana Nayagan’ team," it said.
Awaiting a new release date
The film, which also stars Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani and Narain, now awaits a new official release date. Directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, the big-budget project – also titled ‘Jana Neta’ in Hindi – has drawn intense scrutiny due to its timing ahead of the March–April Assembly elections.
