‘Vaazha 2’ smashes records, joins Malayalam cinema’s all-time top 5

‘Vaazha 2: Biopic of a Billion Bros’ has stormed into the top tier of Malayalam cinema history, breaking multiple records and surpassing the lifetime earnings of several major blockbusters within days of release. The coming-of-age drama, directed by Savin SA and fronted by Hashir, has now officially entered the list of the top five highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time, following an extraordinary 13-day run at the box office.
The film, with a runtime of 2 hours and 43 minutes, raced into the ₹100-crore club in its first week, has outperformed its predecessor and continues to dominate ticket sales across India and overseas.
Rapid surge to ₹176 crore worldwide
On Day 13, ‘Vaazha 2’ earned a net ₹4.95 crore from 1,979 shows in India, a marginal 2% drop from the previous day. This pushed its India gross to ₹101.30 crore and its India net to ₹87.50 crore. Overseas numbers remain robust, with the film adding another ₹50 lakh on Day 13, bringing foreign collections to ₹74.75 crore.
With this, the film’s global gross has climbed to an impressive ₹176.05 crore, a figure that cements its status among Malayalam cinema’s highest earners.
The day-wise India net collections, as reported by Sacnilk, are as follows:
- Day 1: ₹4.75 crore
- Day 2: ₹5.50 crore
- Day 3: ₹7.20 crore

Strong narrative and youth appeal drive success
The film’s staying power is attributed to its relatable storyline rooted in school life, friendships and everyday aspirations. Its nostalgic tone has resonated not only with younger viewers but also with older audiences, helping the film find success far beyond Kerala.
Made on a reported budget of around ₹10 crore, the film features a cast including Hashir, Vinayak, Alan Bin Siraj, Ajin Joy, Biju Kuttan, Alphonse Puthren, Vijay Babu, Aju Varghese, Ameen and Angel Maria. The music is led by Ankit Menon, with contributions from Malayali Monkeys, Rajat Prakash (Hatsmyth), Parvatish Pradeep, Rzee, Muthu, Arcado, Jazir Muhammed, Ashwin Aryan and Electronic Kili. Cinematography is handled by Akhil Lailasuran, while editing is by Kannan Mohan.
‘Vaazha 3’ announced
Riding on the wave of ‘Vaazha 2’s success, director Vipin Das has announced the next instalment, ‘Vaazha 3: Biopic of a Billion Girls’. The franchise will shift to a fully female-led narrative, marking a creative departure from the previous films.
Das said the decision reflects changing audience expectations and an effort to tell “fresher, more inclusive stories.” The film is currently in development, with production expected to begin in 2027. Open auditions will be held once the script is finalised, continuing the franchise’s tradition of introducing new talent.
With its explosive commercial run, ‘Vaazha 2’ has already surpassed ‘2018’ and now sits comfortably in the all-time top five Malayalam grossers. Analysts say the film may challenge the lifetime earnings of ‘Lokah Chapter One: Chandra’ and ‘Thudarum’ if current trends hold.
