‘Vaazha 2’ surges past ‘Lokah’ to claim No 1 spot at Kerala box office

‘Vaazha 2’ has climbed to the top of the Kerala box-office chart, surpassing major titles such as ‘Lokah’ and consolidating its position as the state’s biggest commercial success of the year. The coming-of-age sequel, released just over three weeks ago, has shown remarkable staying power driven not by traditional star pull but by a sustained wave of audience endorsement.
According to industry tracking estimates, the film has collected roughly ₹121 crore in Kerala within 24 days of release, outpacing competing titles and widening its lead with each passing day. Its worldwide gross has touched approximately ₹220 crore, placing it among the top-earning Malayalam titles of all time, behind only large-scale releases such as ‘L2: Empuraan’, ‘Manjummel Boys’ and ‘Thudarum’.
Record-breaking run
Unlike many recent releases that peak during opening weekend, ‘Vaazha 2’ has maintained strong occupancy throughout its first three weeks. The film crossed the ₹100-crore global mark within its first seven days and entered the ₹100-crore club in Kerala in a little over two weeks, one of the fastest films to reach both milestones. By Day 17–18, it had already surpassed ₹200 crore worldwide, becoming only the fifth Malayalam film to do so.
Its performance is notable not just for scale but for stability. Word-of-mouth endorsements from younger viewers and family audiences have fuelled the film’s momentum, helping it sustain its run deep into its fourth week with minimal drop-off.
Sequel strikes a chord
The film continues the narrative introduced in ‘Vaazha: Biopic of a Billion Boys’, following four friends navigating adulthood and the emotional pressures that accompany it. Themes of responsibility, identity and personal growth lie at the heart of the story, grounding the sequel in familiarity while allowing its characters to evolve in meaningful ways.
Written by filmmaker Vipin Das and directed by debutant Savin SA, the film stars prominent Malayalam digital creators including Hashir, Alan Bin Siraj, Ajin Joy and Vinayak V. Despite its relatively fresh cast, the film opened strongly on 2 April and has since expanded its theatrical footprint through audience-driven demand.
Overseas markets push global numbers upward
While Kerala remains its strongest base, ‘Vaazha 2’ has also posted exceptional overseas numbers. The Gulf region has been pivotal, contributing over ₹50 crore to the international total. The UAE alone has generated approximately ₹38-40 crore, while other GCC territories added around ₹10.27 crore and Saudi Arabia ₹4.68 crore. The UK and Ireland market has brought in about ₹7.5 crore, North America ₹5.8 crore, and Australia–New Zealand about ₹2.5 crore.
With the Telugu-dubbed version recently launched worldwide, including in key territories such as North America and the UK, the film’s overseas revenue is expected to climb further.
