The mustache that shaped his destiny: Pankaj Dheer’s journey to be Karna in Mahabharat

Veteran Indian actor Pankaj Dheer, who passed away at the age of 68 after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, would be best remembered for his iconic portrayal of Karna in B R Chopra’s 1988 television classic Mahabharat.
Born on November 9, 1956, in Punjab, Pankaj Dheer carved a niche for himself in Indian television and cinema with his powerful screen presence and versatile acting skills. Apart from his unforgettable role as Karna, he also showcased his talent in films like ‘Sadda Muqaddar’ (1998) and ‘Ikke Pe Ikka’ (1994), and ventured into direction with the 1983 adult film ‘Bombay Fantasy’, marking a unique chapter in Indian film history.
His journey to stardom was marked by a notable twist during the making of Mahabharat. In an old interview with Lehren Retro, Pankaj Dheer revealed that he was initially considered for the role of Arjun. However, when informed that he would have to shave off his moustache to play Brihannala — Arjun's disguised form — he refused, believing he wouldn't look good without it. This decision led to a temporary fallout with director B R Chopra. But fate had other plans: months later, Chopra called him back to offer the role of Karna, Arjun’s complex arch-nemesis and brother — a character that would go on to define Pankaj Dheer’s career.
Beyond his own achievements, Pankaj Dheer was part of a family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry. He was the son of director Late C L Dheer, the brother of producer Satluj Dheer, and the father of actor Nikitin Dheer, carrying forward a rich legacy of cinematic contribution.
Pankaj Dheer’s impact on Indian television remains enduring, with his portrayal of Karna celebrated for its depth and nuance. His dedication to his craft and his memorable performances have left an indelible mark on audiences and the industry alike.
He is survived by his wife, Anita Dheer, and their two children. His legacy as one of Indian television’s most respected actors will continue to inspire generations.
