'The script is worth the wait': What Matt Reeves promises for 'The Batman 2'

After a patient and meticulous process, director Matt Reeves has finally completed the script for The Batman: Part II, offering fans a glimpse into the journey behind the highly anticipated sequel. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter during the 2025 Emmy Awards, Reeves described the process as “a journey that is taking longer than I would’ve wanted for a lot of reasons.” However, he quickly emphasised, “the script is worth the wait,” underscoring his commitment to delivering a story that lives up to the expectations set by the first film.
In a move befitting the mystery and secrecy surrounding the project, Reeves revealed that the screenplay was sent to Robert Pattinson, who reprises his role as Batman, in a highly secure pouch protected by a coded lock. Sharing a lighthearted anecdote, Reeves said, “My assistant, Benito, sought out a very high-security pouch with a code that needed to be sent separately. Then [Pattinson] was like, ‘I can’t open it.’ I said, ‘I know, here’s the code.’ He managed to open it, and afterwards, we had a FaceTime chat once he had read it. It was thrilling.” The emphasis on safeguarding the plot highlights the detective story nature of the film and the importance of preserving its surprises.
Scheduled to begin filming in spring 2026 with a theatrical release set for October 1, 2027, The Batman: Part II comes more than five years after the original 2022 movie, which grossed over $765 million worldwide and redefined Gotham’s cinematic landscape. Pattinson’s positive reaction to the screenplay was a significant endorsement, with Reeves stating, “He’s Batman, and if he doesn’t like it, it's not good. I was super excited because I thought that he really would. The things that it does for his character, for Batman and for Bruce have never been done before in this way.”
As production gears up, fans can expect a fresh, innovative chapter that continues to explore the shadows and depths of Gotham with a narrative that promises new revelations and a bold vision for the iconic superhero.
